It is indeed an honor of the Visayas State University to receive this year’s award for the Eco-friendly School. We would like to express our gratitude and thanks to CHED, DENR, Smart Philippines, Nestle Philippines, Meralco and other sponsors of this award. We take the award as an affirmation of our environmental programs and actions in the university such as segregation of trash from collection to disposal, banning one-time use plastic bags, rainforestation, integrated coastal management, tarsier and biodiversity conservation, alternative energy researches and many more.

The Visayas State University has always been a campus blessed with abundance and beauty of nature. The campus of more than a thousand hectares and is strategically located between the green forest of the majestic Mt. Pangasugan in the east and the clear blue waters of the Camotes Sea on the west. In between is a community that considers the campus a paradise, proud of the campus where they live and always declare that VSU does not only mean Visayas State University but also means Very Scenic University.

After the External Screening Committee (ESC) evaluated the Visayas State University (VSU) as one of the three finalists from among the 18 contenders nationwide for the Tanglaw Award, the Governing Council (GC) acted the ESC recommendation during its meeting on October 3, 2013. The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) proclaimed VSU as the winner in the Search for Tanglaw Award 2013.

After the Erasmus Mundus scholars at VSU had organized into the Erasmus Mundus Club under the leadership of Dr. Rotacio S. Gravoso, they celebrated the VSU Erasmus Mundus Day on September 27, 2013 at the Center for Continuing Education. The occasion was graced by Dr. Julian Vassallo, Political Counsellor of the European Union (EU) Delegation to the Philippines.

The activity served as a venue for the Erasmus Mundus Scholars to share insights and for the Erasmus Mundus Programme-Philippines to present its various scholarship grants.

A group of 19 participantscomposed of six members of the Regional R & D Coordinating Committee (RRDCC)/Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG), three program coordinators, one Consortium Director, one RRDCC Chairman, and eight ViCARP/VSU staff conducted on September 23-27, 2013 a Continuing Education on Agricultural Research and Technology Management in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation, Inc. (PTFCF) recognized its partnership with the Visayas State Univesity (VSU) as they work hand-in-hand in forestry conservation projects nationwide. The Certificate of Recognition was presented to VSU “for developing forest conservation approaches that restore forests and benefit forest-dependent communities” during the 10th Anniversary of the Tropical Forest Conservation Fund (TFCF) in the Philippines Fellowship and Recognition Night held on September 18, 2013 at the Diamond Hotel, Manila.

Eleven out of fourteen (78.57%) BS Chemistry graduates of the Visayas State University who took the 2013 Chemists Licensure Examination successfully hurdled the exam given by the Board of Chemistry in Manila on September 17-18. The Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) released the results of the Chemists Licensure Examination on September 20, 2013, two days after the test was conducted.

         Director Michael M. dela Cruz, Director II of the Western Leyte-Biliran Field Office, joined the VSU cummunity in the culmination of the 113th Philippine Civil Service Commission Anniversary Month Celebration in the afternoon of September 25, 2013 at the VSU Gymnatorium.

     The young and energetic CSC Director even joined the VSU employees in the Fun Walk/Run as one of the highlights of the culmination program which kicked-off at the VSU Eco Park going to the new VSU Oval and finally to the VSU Gymnatorium for the Culmination Program.

In its effort to promote wider adoption of the recommended technologies for jackfruit and strengthen rural-based organizations/cluster of jackfruit farmers to improve their marketing power, the Visayas State University (VSU) has identified two private entrepreneurs in Leyte to avail of jackfruit technology (vacuum fried and dehydrated jackruit) for commercialization.

The vacuum fried and dehydrated jackfruit products were developed by Dr. Lemuel M. Diamante, then faculty member of VSU’s Department of Food Science and Technology (DFST) who is now connected with Lincoln University in New Zealand as Food Engineer, from his research on “Development of Processing Techniques for Jackfruit in Eastern Visayas” funded by the Bureau of Agricultural Research in 1997-1998.

            The Office of the Vice President for Planning and Resource Generation (OVPPRG) and the Office of the Director for Administration and Human Resource Development (ODA-HRD), through the Performance Management Team (PMT), facilitated the “Performance Planning Review and Workshop Revisiting 2013 Targets and Presentation of 2013 Accomplishments” on September 23-24, 2013 at the VSU’s Center for Continuing Education.

          According to Dr. Edgardo E. Tulin, VP for Planning and Resource Generation and chairman of the PMT, the activity sought to revisit the offices’ targets for 2013 as indicated in their OPCRs, and at the same time look into the performance of the different delivery units of the University for the past nine months.
