VSU Economics Teams win first, third places in nat’l research tilt

Two teams from the VSU Department of Economics placed first and third in the Outstanding Research Paper search during the 16th Young Economists’ Main Convention (YEMC) at De La Salle University, Manila, June 15.
The team of Therese Ratilla, Rhena Jane Soria, Priscilla Balo, and Willa Rose Contapay won the grand prize against the team from De La Salle University. Their paper, Investment appraisal and risk assessment of protected vegetable cultivation under Leyte conditions, earned the team a cash prize of PHP25,000. Ratilla graduated summa cum laude and as the Class 2017 Valedictorian.

The paper, Profit maximizing combination of vegetable crops enterprise for small-scale farmers in the Visayas, by Wendy Enerlan, Romulo Jay Saloma, and Analou Taganas got the second place with a cash prize of PHP 5,000.
Meanwhile, Rhena Jane Soria landed on the second place in the On-the-Spot Policy Making Contest after competing with a delegate from Adamson University.
YEMC is an annual gathering of Economics students in the country. The two-day YEMC this year was themed Leading the Path Towards Shared Prosperity.
YEMC Commissioner Evan Lance Liao said the convention “hopes to tap and hone [young economists’] potentials as young leaders and [help them] grow into catalysts and agents of transformation.”
