Dr. Roel Leezer, a small and large animal practitioner, visited the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) on July 6-7, 2015. He conducted a lecture about Veterinary Cardiology among the 5th and 6th year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students.

Dr. Leezer also donated surgical instruments and materials, stethoscope, electro cautery device, urinary catheters, skin punch biopsy and several others to the college. Present during the turnover ceremony were Dr. Jose L. Bacusmo, VSU President; Dr. Eugene B. Lanada, college dean; and some CVM faculty—Dr. Harvie Portugaliza, Dr. Naomi Torregoza, Dr. Analyn Blanza, Dr. Froiland Sanchez, and Dr. Sheila Romero.

The total enrollment of the Visayas State University (VSU) Main Campus in Baybay City, Leyte has reached 8,017 students both in the undergraduate and graduate levels as released by the Office of the University Registrar on July 13, 2015.  As compared to last year’s enrollment of 7,174, this first semester’s enrollment increased by 11.19%.  There are 7,757 students enrolled in the different undergraduate degree programs and 260 in the graduate degree programs.

Based on the comparative analysis of data, the Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness (BSAB) remains to have the highest total number of students enrolled this first semester at 1,085 as compared to last year’s 943 with an increase of 15.06%.  The Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSA) followed with 847 students enrolled with an increase of 37.95% as compared to last year’s enrollment of 614.

 

The other top eight degree programs based on the highest total number of enrollment are as follows: Bachelor of Science in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management (BSHRTM) – 799; Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) – 794; Bachelor of Animal Science (BAS) – 579; Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) – 517; Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) – 408; Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) – 364; Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED) – 310, and Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) – 246.  JFMBaldos

Dr. Maria Anabelle D. Gerona, instructor of VSU’s Department of Development Communication (DDC), topped among the 48 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) graduates of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) during the UPLB Commencement Exercises on July 4, 2015 at the DL Umali Freedom Park in the said university. She completed her Ph.D. in Development Communication with cognate in Development Management and Governance within the prescribed three-year course under the SEARCA-DAAD Scholarship Program. Her dissertation focused on “Theorizing (dis)engagement, voice and silence in a community-based forest management organization” with Dr. Serlie Jamias as her adviser.

The Visayas State University (VSU) Main Campus in Baybay City, Leyte organized a conference on Experiences and Lessons Learned in Rehabilitating Typhoon-Damaged Agriculture and hosted the 6th PSAI Biennial Convention on July 30 – August 1, 2015 at the VSU Convention Hall.

A group of experts from Korea and personnel of Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in the Philippines conducted on June 30-July 1, 2015 an ocular survey at the VSU-Tolosa Campus where the 4-million US dollar project funded by KOICA will be established.  The group composed of Mr. Joon Bang (Construction Manager, Heerim), Mr. Bok-ji Kim (Project Manager, Usun Co., Ltd), Mr Hong-shik Shin (Architecture Assistant, Usun Co., Ltd), Ms. Sunhyung Hwang (Assistant Country Director, KOICA Philippines), Ms. Soon Ok Kim (Education Specialist, KOICA Philippines), and Ms. Maria Regina Arquiza (Program Officer, KOICA Philippines) were warmly welcomed by Dr. Lourdes B. Cano, VSU-Tolosa Dean, and Dr. Obdulia G. Camoying, VSU-Tolosa Assistant Dean.
