At least 15 Philippine higher education institutions (HEIs), including Visayas State University, have been listed as ‘Reporter’ status of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025.
This global ranking is made by assessing research-oriented universities in all their main areas, including teaching, research, sharing knowledge, and international outlook.
Only 6 HEIs in the country have been ranked and met the criteria of THE World University Rankings 2025, with Ateneo de Manila University at 1001-1200, University of the Philippines at 1201-1500, while De La Salle University, Mapua University, Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology, and University of Santo Tomas are all at 1501+.
According to its methodology, universities across the world are ranked based on these performance indicators that are grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment); research environment (volume, income, and reputation); research quality (citation impact, research strength, research excellence, and research influence); international outlook (staff, students, and research); and industry (income and patents).
While the 'reporter’ status of VSU indicated its visibility and active participation in THE World University Rankings, it still has to surpass the indicators to be ranked, including at least 1,000 papers published in reputable publications in a five-year period.
“Universities can be excluded from the World University Rankings if they do not teach undergraduates or if their research output amounted to fewer than 1,000 relevant publications between 2019 and 2023 (with a minimum of 100 a year, down from 150 in previous years). Universities can also be excluded if 80 percent or more of their research output is exclusively in one of our 11 subject areas,” THE website stated on their website.
VSU has to work more on its research publication to keep up its performance in future rankings.
The other universities enlisted as ‘reporter’ status are Cebu Technological University, Central Luzon State University, De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde, Lyceum-Northwestern University, Manila Central University, National University Philippines, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, Philippine State College of Aeronautics, Quezon City University, Saint Louis University, Tarlac Agricultural University, University of Eastern Philippines, University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, and University of Immaculate Conception.
