Norman John N. Bandibas, a first-year computer science student, won a gold medal in the Philippine International Mathematical Olympiad (PhIMO) Final Round 2024, a friendly mathematical problem-solving competition.
Bandibas represented the Philippines under the Sogod National High School, Senior Secondary Category. The event happened in the National Capital Region at the EVM Convention Center in Quezon City.
PhIMO is designed to honor the best learners in the world in mathematical problem solving through friendly competition and foster cultural exchange among participating countries, including Australia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
“It was an honor to participate and represent my school, Sogod National High School, and my country, the Philippines, in that prestigious event attended by different countries. I didn't expect to win a gold medal, and I felt fulfilled to win that award, especially since that was my last Int'l Math Olympiad Contest on my senior high school journey. Overall, it was a wonderful event,” Bandibas highlighted.
According to the #ProudViscan winner, PhIMO covers numbers and number sense, geometry, patterns and algebra, measurements, statistics and probability, functions and their graphs, basic business mathematics, and logic.
In a report with Amaranth, Bandibas and his teammate Cid Benedict Telin secured the gold medal, and overall, the Team Philippines secured several gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively.
“Words cannot express how thankful I am to my family and my coach for their unwavering trust and support of us on our journey. Also, I would like to thank the many sponsors who financially helped to give me a chance to participate in that prestigious event,” Bandibas shared.
