Before the holiday break, the Visayas State University received yet another recognition from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), which is a fitting Christmas present for the #ProudViscan community.
In a social media post, the official Facebook page of the Philippine Quality Award Program announced the recipients of the Levels 1 and 2 Recognition of the 2023 PQA Regionalization Program.
This regionalization program of the PQA was established through DTI DAO 22-12, decentralizing the PQA Program through regional recognition for Levels 1 and 2 that will be valid for 2 years as a qualifying mechanism for the national recognition and eventual bestowment of the most coveted PQA.
It is designed to provide better opportunities to deserving organizations from the regions to receive Levels 1 and 2 Recognitions and encourage them to aspire for and attain higher levels of organizational performance in the future.
The PQA is the highest national recognition program that recognizes achievements of public and private sector organizations in their journey towards performance excellence. It is a global competitiveness template that aims to encourage and engage public and private organizations and other stakeholders to strive for and attain excellence in the core operations of their institution.
Moreover, this award giving body is the centerpiece program of the National Action Agenda for Productivity (NAAP), which is the blueprint for the country's integrated approach to improve economy-wide productivity started during the term of former President Fidel V. Ramos in response to the growing challenges of globalization.
The PQA sets a standard of excellence to help Filipino organizations achieve world-class performance that serves as a template for competitiveness based on the principles of Total Quality Management (TQM).
This national quality award is comparable with the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) of the United States and those in Europe and Asia.
In the Philippines, around 80 public and private corporations have become recipients of the PQA since its inception in 1997. Of this number, 12 are academic institutions with no previous recipient from the group of state universities and colleges (SUCs).
In Eastern Visayas, 3 other universities aside from VSU that were also recognized as a Level 2 Regional PQA recipient. These include Biliran Province State University (BiPSU), Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) and Eastern Samar State University (ESSU).
Dr. Joel Rey U. Acob, the focal person of VSU’s first application to the regional PQA, is confident that the university will be able to qualify for the National PQA in two years time.
“Our systems have long been in place to qualify for the national PQA because of what we have collectively done in our ISO accreditation. What we just need to pursue in the next two years is to exceed our submitted documentary evidence in 2023 so that our chances of getting this prestigious institutional award will be greater,” Dr. Acob explained.
Meanwhile, newly designated Director for Quality Assurance Dr. Rotacio S. Gravoso expressed his delight for this regional recognition. He is hopeful that the next two years will be devoted to improving our systems and operations even further so that VSU will soon be part of the prestigious list of institutions awarded with a national PQA.
