The Department of Development Communication (DDC) of the Visayas State University (VSU), as the Center of Development in Development Communication in the country, conducted a training-workshop on Designing Development Communication Research on June 17-19, 2015 at the Audio Visual Room of the Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension.
According to Dr. Christina A. Gabrillo, head of DDC, the activity was conceived after the DDC faculty conducted a series of training needs assessment among DevCom educators and practitioners in Visayas and Mindanao. The top priority need identified after the survey was on designing development communication research, specifically, in conceptualizing winning research proposals, developing the research objectives, reviewing the literature, anchoring the research on existing literature, designing the research methodology, and making of the budget and workplan.
As a result, twelve academicians and researchers from various government agencies responded to the invitation of VSU’s DDC for the said training. The participants consisted of Jose Gerwin Gabon and Phil Harold Mercurio of Northwest Samar State University in Calbayog City; Melinda Petalcorin of the Agricultural Training Institute of Region 8; Mizrain Quinalagan and Rictibert Pamunag of the Department of Agriculture-ZAMPIARC of Region IX; Ruby Agnila of DA-Leyte; Reina Buendia and Romeo Delmo of DA-8 in Babatngon and Tacloban; Regina Patricia Jamer of Eastern Samar State University in Borongan City; Maria Rubi Parrocho and Jonah Gay Pedraza of Samar State University in Catbalogan City; and Veronica Torres of the Provincial LGU and Office of the Provincial Agriculturist of Leyte in Tacloban City.
After the 3-day workshop, the participants came up with a research proposal as the workshop output based on the format required by the prospective funding agencies, such as that of PCAARRD, CHED, DOST, VSU or of their respective agencies.
To equip them with some knowledge on how a proposal should be done, the participants were exposed to some lectures and sharing of communication research experiences mostly from the DDC faculty. These were: A Review of Communication Theories, Justifying the Study, and Reviewing the Literature by Dr. Editha G. Cagasan; Conceptualizing Winning Research Proposals, Theoretical and Conceptual Framework by Dr. Rotacio S. Gravoso; Methodology by Dr. Monina M. Escalada; Data Analysis by Dr. Moises Neil Seriño of the Department of Economics; and Budget and Workplan Preparation by Dr. Christina A. Gabrillo.
The participants were also asked to present their research proposal outputs for critiquing by the communication experts.
In his closing message prior to the distribution of certificates to the participants, Dr. Jose L. Bacusmo, VSU President, congratulated the DDC faculty for organizing the training-workshop that enabled the participants to know how social science research is being conducted. “Although there are some terminologies which could not be found in some biological science research, but somehow the terms are more or less similar in meaning for both types of research. In fact, you are very lucky that you have now new knowledge about social science research,” Dr. Bacusmo quipped. JFMBaldos
