The Visayas State University has solidified its reputation as one of the leading institutions for sustainability by ranking 36th in the Philippines and 898th globally in the 15th edition of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.

With 63 universities in the country participating, this achievement places VSU among the top universities that advocate environmental responsibility.

This is the first time that VSU has submitted itself for this ranking and made its inaugural participation strong and remarkable.

VSU has long been integrating sustainable practices into its academic offerings, administrative services, and infrastructure development to address pressing environmental challenges through research, innovation, and community engagements.

Among the six criteria, VSU tops in the Education and Research (ED) category in the country, emphasizing the university’s effort to create and support a new generation engaged with and dedicated to addressing sustainability issues.

University President Dr. Prose Ivy G. Yepes expressed her delight following this recognition.
“This milestone is a proof of our efforts toward sustainability and motivates us to pursue even greater achievements for all stakeholders and the communities we serve,” President Yepes said.

Environmental sustainability

Known for its abundance of natural resources and eco-friendly features, the installation of solar panels and energy-efficient lighting and air-conditioning systems are part of  the VSU’s priorities to decrease the dependency on traditional sources of energy.

Further, the university keeps an eye on ways to make improvements in the energy efficiency of the infrastructure, installation of water-saving technologies and increasing green spaces.

Waste reduction and eco-friendly transportation

VSU has taken a comprehensive approach to waste management including recycling, composting, and proper waste segregation.

A notable initiative is the organic waste composting program of the university. This utilizes food wastes and greens to produce organic fertilizer for its agricultural plots.

VSU also imposed a ban on the use of single-use plastics to further minimize wastes. President Yepes  has consistently reinforced this policy in her discussions with faculty, staff, students, and suppliers to make it an important message in her campaign for sustainable practices.

Moreover, VSU has adopted policies that encourage sustainable mobility. With bike-friendly pathways and carpooling, these efforts prioritize sustainable mobility, decrease carbon emissions, promote healthier lifestyles, and create an environmentally conscious academic community.

Water management and resource conversation

VSU secured its water supply from Mt. Pangasugan and Leyte Cordilleras to ensure long-term sustainability. Investments on water-efficient fixtures continue to reduce water consumption through continued support to VSU's conservation efforts for future generations.

Further, VSU offers courses in environmental science, agriculture, and climate change, supplemented by research projects focused on sustainable farming and mitigation strategies.

With its research contributions and academic offerings, VSU has established itself as a hub for environmental studies in the Visayas region and beyond, reinforcing the role of VSU as a model for sustainable development both in the Philippines and in the world.

The UI GreenMetric University Ranking evaluates universities on their environmental initiatives, including energy use, waste management, water conservation, and transportation system, aiming to encourage higher education institutions to prioritize sustainability in their academic programs and operations.
