Computer science students Paul Andrae Naval, Keith Derreck C. Valdeo, and Martin Benedict E. Ybas from VSU Team 2 secured the first runner-up title in the region's quantum computing competition.

The VSU Team 2 received a Php 7,000 cash prize with a plaque, medals, merchandise, and certificates from the Quantum Computing Society of the Philippines (OneQuantum Philippines).

Seven teams competed in the Quantum Computing Hackathon hosted by the University of the Philippines Tacloban College in collaboration with the Quantum Computing Society of the Philippines and the Department of Science and Technology – Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI), with two teams each representing VSU, UP Tacloban College, AMA Computer College Tacloban, and a sole team from Philippine Science High School - Eastern Visayas Campus.

The VSU Team 2, together with VSU Team 1, composed of Matthew Gerald A. Bucol, Maria Clarissa B. Dolor, and Angielyn J. Dacutanan, were accompanied by their coaches, Mr. Rodney Maniego, Jr. and Ms. Joy Espinosa.

UP Tacloban Teams dominated in the hackathon by securing two places, 1st and 3rd, respectively.

Aside from the competition, the participants also attended a seminar on quantum technologies, including cryptographic resilience in the quantum era, quantum computing with atoms, DOST-ASTI’s iTANONG NLP project, and DOST-ASTI’s Quantum Circuit Simulator project.

Quantum computing combines ideas from “computer science, physics, and math to solve complex problems faster than traditional computers by using the principles of quantum mechanics.”

The Quantum Computing Hackathon was held on October 18, 2024, at UP Tacloban College.
