Pres. Tulin highlights VSU’s global competence thrust in 2018 address

As VSU’s vision shifts to a bigger scope to become “a globally competitive university of science, technology, and environmental conservation,” VSU President Edgardo E. Tulin continues to groom the university to be able to compete in the international arena by providing access to state-of-the-art buildings and facilities, globally competent workforce, accredited quality programs, and strong linkages with local, national and international partners.

In his third State of the University Address (SUA), Dr. Tulin highlighted the developments the whole VSU system has undertaken during the year.

Campus developments

On infrastructure, the President stands firm on his promise of creating convenient learning spaces for students. VSU has inaugurated several buildings not only in the main campus but also in each of VSU’s branch campuses. This includes the multi-million state-of-the-art buildings in VSU Tolosa donated by the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the Department of Biotechnology building, and the College of Engineering Annex Building.

A number of buildings are still ongoing construction including the Innovation Center and the Regional Climate Change Research and Development Center, the only one of their kind in the region; the Biodiversity Museum, and the International Dormitory, among many others.  

VSU also inaugurated the Visayas Socio-Economic Research and Data Analytics Center (ViSERDAC) based at the main campus’ Department of Economics. This is the first research and data analytics center in the Visayas, and the third in the country.

Outstanding Workforce

VSU also welcomes 13 returning scholars who have finished doctorate degrees in reputable institutions in the Philippines and abroad. Furthermore, more than 100 faculty/staff are also currently pursuing graduate studies in universities around the globe.

Tulin also gave recognition to the faculty and staff who bagged prestigious local, national and international awards. This includes that from the Civil Service Commission (CSC) such as the 2018 Presidential Lingkod Bayan Award group category, the highest public service award in the country, accorded to VSU Forest Restoration and Livelihood (FoRestaL) Advocates; and the National Academy for Science and Technology (NAST) Outstanding Administrator Award given to Dr. Edgardo E. Tulin, among others.

VSU graduates who have topped the board exams in Agriculture, Geodetic Engineers, Chemical Technicians and the special teachers’ exam for OFWs were also given due recognition. Tulin also commended the notable passing percentages of VSU in various licensure exams.

Student Welfare

The President joyously announced that VSU is recognized as the number one SUC in the country. VSU’s programs consistently pass local and international accreditations such as that of the Washington Accord and the Accrediting Agency for Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP).

With the implementation of the Free Tuition Law, VSU admits more than 10,000 students in the main and satellite campuses. VSU’s first entrance exam for freshmen was successfully instituted and the launching of the online enrolment system made the enrolment process convenient for the staggering number of students.

Access to Success

VSU continues to strengthen long-time partnerships with local, national and international agencies for the university’s endeavors in instruction, research, and extension.

The university continuously hosts several conventions, in regional, national and international scopes. This includes the Regional Abaca Summit, the National COCOFED Scholars Congress, the first Visayas-wide Cassava Congress and the first ever Queen Pineapple FIESTA. In October, VSU hosted the 22nd Asian Association of Agricultural Colleges and Universities (AAACU) Biennial Conference, an international event attended by agricultural giants in Asia and America.

Tulin believes that these conferences with local and international partners create an interactive environment and connection with the university’s stakeholders, farmers, students, researchers and the rest of the VSU community.

Though admitting that there are still many hurdles in VSU’s ambitious journey to the international arena, President Tulin is confident that with all these developments in place and with everyone sharing the same vision as the university, VSU is on the road to global comparability.

Tulin encouraged the whole of VSU to unite and work hand-in-hand to make VSU the best in the country.

“Finally, as we put all our best efforts to achieve our goals, let us continue to be united in the best way we can. Giving access to everyone to grow, develop and reach their aspirations is what makes this institution evolved into the best state university in the country,” Tulin said.

The SUA 2018 was delivered during VSU’s annual Christmas Lighting Ceremony held at the university’s Main Entrance, December 4. The address was pushed back due to power interruption during the 2018 Academic Convocation held at the Convention Center, December 3.
