About the Program
The BSA major in Soil Science (BSA-SS) is among the programs offered by the Department of Soil Science (DSS) under the College of Agriculture and Food Science. Soil Science is the study of soil as a natural resource on the surface of the earth including soil genesis, classification and mapping, physical, chemical and biological soil properties. The different soil properties are important for crop suitability and relevant factors to consider when it comes to proper land use. Soil Science is now considered to be a natural science with applications in various fields such as forestry, agriculture, ecology, geography and environmental science. Presently, focus is on environmental or ecological researches ranging from soil and water pollution to global warming.
The Department of Soil Science was created in 2014 under the administration of President Jose L. Bacusmo. Before, it was the Department of Agronomy and Soil Science which was separated into two units, the Department of Agronomy and Department of Soil Science. DSS has 8 core faculty (4 with PhD degree , 1 PhD candidate and 3 with MS degree). There are also affiliate faculty (2 PhDs, 1 MS and 1 PhD candidate) from research units.
Program highlights
- The department of Soil Science has a mission to develop internationally competitive leaders in soil science, generate and disseminate scientific knowledge and innovative technology on sustainable management and protection of soil resources.
- Soil Science majors can choose different fields of specialization in which their undergraduate thesis will focus into:
- Soil Genesis – deals with the origin/formation of soils
- Soil Physics – study of the soil physical properties and processes
- Soil Microbiology - study of soil microorganisms and biochemical processes in soils
- Soil Chemistry – deals with mineralogy, chemical processes that are of agricultural and environmental importance
- Soil Fertility and Management – deals with supply of soil nutrients to plants in proper amounts and proportions and proper soil management
- Soil Survey and Classification - mapping, field characterization, classification
- Soil and Water Conservation - science of soil loss and techniques to prevent soil loss
