DevCom alumna bags best paper award in nat’l communication research confab

Miss Eula Dee A. Lañada, 2013 VSU graduate of BS in Development Communication major in Development Journalism, won the Best Undergraduate Research Paper Award during the 3^rd National Communication Research Conference (NCRC) held on February 6-8, 2014 at the College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City.

Miss Lañada’s paper entitled “Communication Environment and Risk Perception of Dog-borne Zoonotic Diseases among Baybay, Leyte Residents” with Ms. Nelfa Glova, formerly a media production specialist of VSU’s Office of the Director for Extension, as her thesis adviser, bested other seven entries that were shortlisted and qualified for the contest. One of them was the thesis of Miss Jeorgia Labador, also a BS DevCom graduate of VSU, who was not able to present her paper since she has recently been hired by the Caraga State University.

The entries from the University of the Philippines Los Baños’ College of Development Communication and the University of Sto. Tomas won the second and third places, respectively. Other entries were from the UP Dilliman’s College of Mass Communication and St. Scholastica’s College Manila.

 Moreover, four undergraduate papers from VSU-DDC were accepted only for presentation and these are the theses of Ma. Victoria Stephane G. Asio (Social/New Media Category), Febelle Dareen D. Rojas (Community Category), Jesame M. Auza (Print Category), and Rosemailene C. Aton (also Community Category).

According to Dr. Wolfreda T. Alesna, professor of the Department of Development Communication, this is the first time that the department participated in the NCRC and submitted the abstracts of students’ research that fit with the theme “Risk Communication” to the NCRC Secretariat.   “Ms. Lañada made a record and a name for VSU-DDC because this is the first time that a thesis from outside Metro Manila won in the NCRC,” Dr. Alesna stressed.

Dr. Alesna, together with Dr. Christina A. Gabrillo, head of VSU-DDC, participated in the NCRC and Teachers’ Forum and escorted the DDC graduates whose theses qualified for presentation and in the contest.

On the other hand, Ms. Glova, now a faculty at the University of the Philippines Mindanao, said “I am proud, happy, and inspired “young” academic mother. I am looking forward to working with you in the future, Eula.”

The NCRC 2014 was hosted by the Department of Communication Research of UP Diliman, along with the Philippine Association of Communication Educators, and the Philippines Communication Society. It aimed to promote awareness about the importance of communication research.

Particularly, the conference sought to benefit the students in communication by providing them with a venue for: 1) developing their research writing and presentation skills, 2) sharing their research activities and finding with other communication and media students, teachers, and practitioners nationwide, and 3) networking with their peers and with professionals all over the country; and

For the teachers, 1) to provide them with updates on the status, teaching and conduct of communication research in the Philippines, and 2) identify areas of collaboration among faculty members from the different regions.
