A distinguished group of  faculty and alumni from the VSU Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FVM) participated and presented papers at the  92nd Philippine Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) Scientific Conference and Annual Convention, held at the SMX Convention Center, Davao City on February 19 to 21, 2025. 

The event brought together more than 2,300 veterinarians, professionals, and stakeholders from across the country, united by the theme: "Crossing Boundaries: Filipino Veterinarians Championing Excellence in the Veterinary Services."

More than 100  #ProudViscan VetMed alumni working in both public and private institutions participated in the conference.

FVM faculty members Dr. Harvie P. Portugaliza, Dr. Agnes M. Taveros, Dr. Jane P. Dautil, Dr. Neka Mailee C. de los Reyes, Dr. Camille R. Enriquez, Dr. Sheila R. Rabe, and Dr. Ana Marquiza M. Quilicot were among those who took part in the conference

Dr. Rabe and Dr. Quilicot presented research papers that contributed to discussion on animal health and welfare.

Dr. Rabe’s study focused on the "Rectal and Tympanic Temperature of F1 Crossbreds of Philippine Carabao (Bubalus bubalis carabanensis) and Bulgarian Murrah (Bubalus bubalis)," while Dr. Quilicot explored the feasibility of implementing an animal-based welfare assessment tool for farm animals in the Philippines.

The three-day convention featured plenary sessions tackling critical veterinary issues, including One Health, antimicrobial resistance, African swine fever (ASF) vaccine innovations, and rabies-free status management. 

Participants also examined avian influenza vaccination strategies and ASFV transmission in pork products. 

Key figures graced the event, with Davao City Mayor Sebastian Z. Duterte delivered the  opening address that highlighted the role of veterinarians in public health and security. 

Department of Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. was also present during the event as the keynote speaker who emphasized the impact of veterinarians on agriculture and animal health. 

The program included the awarding of outstanding veterinarians, technical breakout sessions on companion animals, livestock, poultry, and animal welfare, as well as a business meeting and fellowship night. 

The conference concluded with the formal oath-taking of newly PVMA officers which marked the start of another year of leadership in the veterinary profession. 

VSU’s presence at the PVMA is manifestation of its continuous efforts to advance veterinary education and research, further strengthening its influence in the field.
