The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) awarded Visayas State University with the Certificate of Compliance (COC) for its food technology program after successfully passing the inspection and monitoring visit conducted by the agency on September 23, 2022.
This makes the VSU the first and only delivering institution in Region 8 to qualify for the upcoming board exam that will soon be administered next year.
Chairman Dr. Anthony C. Sales of the newly created National Professional Regulatory Board for Food Technology headed the team of evaluators in physically inspecting the facilities of VSU together with Board Member Remedios V. Baclig, and PRC Region 8 Representative Alma J. Genotiva.
Currently offered under the Department of Food Science and Technology (DFST), the Bachelor of Science in Food Technology (BSFT) program of the university went through a rigorous assessment process including curriculum and faculty profile reviews.
The visiting team also surveyed the facilities and laboratories of the department including the affiliate research units within the university where FoodTech students regularly conduct their research and internship activities.
After a thorough audit, the PRC team thereafter conferred the VSU FoodTech program with the certification for being fully compliant following the basic policies, standards, and conditions required by the commission.
VSU is the 8th higher education institution in the country to be awarded with compliance certification from the PRC. There are 33 other institutions currently under inspection by the PRC.
The activity was facilitated by the DFST faculty and staff led by their Unit Head Dr. Lynette Cimafranca.
Current and retired officials of VSU including Dr. Daniel Leslie S. Tan (the Vice President for Administration and Finance), Dr. Beatriz S. Belonias (the Vice President for Academic Affairs), and Dr. Lutgarda S. Palomar (DFST former professor) accompanied the PRC team during the inspection to also provide valuable insights about the strength of the VSU FoodTech program.
The PRC-issued COC, as stipulated in Republic Act No. 11052 also known as the Philippine Food Technology Act, is a requirement for all institutions in the country offering the BSFT program for their graduates to be permitted to take the licensure examinations which will commence in 2023.
The National Professional Regulatory Board of Food Technology was created under the same law to regulate the practice of food technology in the Philippines, which was signed into law by former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in 2018.
DFST is one of the pioneering institutions to offer food technology in the Visayas and Mindanao. It has a strong pool of faculty members who completed their doctoral degrees in reputable universities here and abroad.
Currently, DFST is also a Shared Service Facility (SSF) of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) accredited to offer food testing and nutritional analysis for local entrepreneurs and agro-industry providers.
