For the first time, the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (DABE) partnered with the University Review Services (URS) to hold an intensive and free supplemental board exam review exclusive for their graduating students and alumni who wish to take the upcoming licensure examination slated next month.
The intensive review mainly aimed to increase the individual and institutional passing performance of VSU agricultural and biosystems engineering (ABE) graduates, considering that around 50% of current graduating students feel less confident in taking the upcoming boards.
The free supplemental review will run for more than a month from June 10 to July 22, 2022. A total of 60 reviewers signed up for the supplemental sessions composed of 41 ABE senior students and 19 alumni.
Engr. Eldon P. De Padua, the incumbent DABE Head explained that the pure online delivery of instruction was the main challenge for ABE students and alumni in passing the board exam.
“I believe that the challenge is true to all students who will be taking their respective board exams right after graduation. There’s so much that we lost in pure online education for more than two years and I think this is also the reason why readiness to take the board exam was quite lower as compared to previous years. We understand this problem so we know that we had to make an initiative to bridge this gap,” Engr. De Padua said.
The URS, which was rebranded in 2019, took care of coordinating and planning the supplemental review sessions through their newly designated Director, Dr. Christy M. Desades.
The new management of the URS was delighted to collaborate with DABE because this could serve as a springboard for them to offer the first and only ABE review program in the entire Visayas region.
Meanwhile, the DABE Head also revealed that a review program should be made available in the Visayas region because their department has long proven their track record in producing board topnotchers in many ABE licensure examinations.
"As a CHED Center of Excellence in Agricultural Engineering, I think it's time to consider opening up an ABE review program here in the Visayas because we are noticing an increasing trend of the ABE graduates, not only within VSU but also in other universities and colleges," Engr. De Padua added.
The review masters chosen to lead the supplemental classes were faculty members who were previous topnotchers of the past board exams. These include Engr. Gerald D. Ompod, who placed 3rd in the October 2019 ABE board examination, and Engr. Ruel C. Lamberte who brought home the 6th spot last year.
If the plan goes well, the URS hopes to offer a review program for ABE in the near future on top of its current review services for graduates of agriculture, forestry, and teacher education.
