More than 50% of the Main Campus has been temporarily powered up with electrical supply coming from the main generators of the VSU Power Plant.
This is five days since #OdettePH ravaged parts of south central Philippines with Southern Leyte, Surigao Del Norte, Province of Dinagat Islands, Negros Occidental, Bohol and Cebu as the most badly hit areas of the typhoon.
Electricity in Baybay City including neighboring municipalities are still being worked on as of this time as the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) are presently restoring the transmission towers and electrical poles toppled by Typhoon Odette.
Selected apartments at the Lower Campus and critical office buildings at the Main Campus have been prioritized to ensure that VSU will continue its operations despite the major damages brought by the weather disturbance.
VSU President Edgardo E. Tulin said that the personnel of the Power, Electrical, and Sounds Maintenance Unit (PESMU) have been doing day and night work to clear all electrical lines and reconnect it back to the VSU Power Plant.
“We’re thankful to our local manpower in PESMU for immediately responding to our needs to temporarily restore electricity in certain parts of the Main Campus. We’re aiming to reconnect all our buildings and units within the Main Campus to the VSU Power Plant before Christmas so that everyone in the Main Campus will have temporary access to electricity,” Dr. Tulin said.
As part of VSU’s service to the community, ATMs were also included in the temporary electrification even at night time to allow people to withdraw needed cash in these trying times.
Mr. Juanito Uy, PNB Baybay Branch Manager expressed his thanks to VSU for including their ATM in the temporary restoration of power within the Main Campus.
“PNB Baybay is very grateful to VSU for powering up our ATM in the Main Campus so that we can continue our service to our community people who are badly needing cash because of the recent typhoon. Doing so allowed us to decongest the number of people lining up in Baybay City for their immediate monetary needs,” the Branch Manager revealed.
Free charging stations were also deployed inside the Main Campus to allow community residents to take advantage of the electrical services of the VSU Power Plant.
Internet is partially up and running
Aside from the need for electricity, access to the internet is also very important as people need to immediately communicate with family and friends in times of crisis.
At VSU, PLDT was the lone telecommunications line up and running right after #OdettePH. But Globe also immediately responded to restore the fiber circuits of the VSU Main Campus to enable core offices of the university to access the internet.
“VSU Main Campus now has partial connectivity both for Globe and PLDT. Our core offices that have been electrified can already access the internet but please know that this may seem unstable at times especially that we have not fully recovered our internet infrastructure in our area. What is important here is that we can now connect to the internet to continue the basic operations of VSU," Mr. Norman O. Villas explains from the Information and Communication Technologies Management Center (ICTMC).
Mr. Norman O. Villas of ICTMC is constantly monitoring internet speed and uptime rate as part of restoring basic operations at the VSU Main Campus.
Ms. Shanette Joy Vivien C. Amador, a staff of the University Integrated Media Center (UIMC) who is currently coordinating relief operations in Sogod, Southern Leyte emphasized how connectivity in VSU was vital for her to manage a local donation drive from VSU and other stakeholders.
“We’re able to extend help to those who need it now because internet connectivity is back in VSU. I’m also happy to note that there are many individuals right now who are willing to extend help to the Typhoon Odette victims especially in my hometown in Sogod,” Ms. Amador expressed.
Faculty, stranded students including community people can access the free internet service at the VSU Guardpost using the VSU Free WiFi access from the ICTMC.
A stranded student connects to her family members using the free internet service at the Department of Science and Technology (DCST) Building.
Daniela Gervacio, a stranded student living in Ilang-ilang Dormitory is thankful for the free internet access that is being provided by the university.
“The Internet is really important at these times when we need to constantly communicate with our family members to personally check on their situation back home. It’s also good to know that mobile internet has already improved recently because the past few days have been difficult to access even basic data signal,” the stranded student said.
