Two BS Economics students bagged the top prizes in the essay writing contest of the Visayas Economic Conference mainly organized by the Philippine Economics Society (PES).
Mr. Nathaniel C. Noya, senior student, and Mr. Niño John Vitor, a freshman, bested all other entries from the different participating schools within the Visayas region with Mr. Noya snagging the college category while Mr. Vitor claimed the high school category.
Mr. Noya’s entry entitled “When It Includes Everyone” tackled the importance of mainstreaming economic literacy as a form of reaching out to everyone so that inclusive economic growth is also felt by the marginalized.
This same essay was accorded the People’s Choice Award after garnering the most number of reactions and shares in social media.
On the other hand, Mr. Vitor’s entry entitled “Economics: A Science of Choice and Change” delved into the importance of economics as applied in the different sectors of the society. Mr. Vitor’s high school essay competed in this conference under Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) Laboratory High School based in the town of Tomas Oppus. When he competed in the conference, however, he was already at VSU as a freshman economics student.
The PES - Visayas Economics Conference was held virtually via Zoom on August 20, 2021, wherein regional registration for the contest was opened in July of the same year, and was participated by numerous students across the Visayas region.
This year’s conference theme was anchored on “Engendering Encouraging Economics Education and Knowledge for Nation Building” and was co-presented by the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), University of San Carlos (USC) and VSU.
The top 3 winners of this regional conference received certificates and cash prizes courtesy of PES.
