The Regional Climate Change Research and Development Center (RCCRDC) of the Visayas State University (VSU) hosted the National Youth Conference on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation, Disaster Risk Reduction, and Resilience on November 20-22, 2019 at the VSU Convention Center.

Around 135 delegates coming from different local government units, state universities and colleges, youth-led environmental organizations, experts, and professionals participated in the national event.

The two-day conference themed: “Engaging the Youth in Climate Action, DRR, and Resilience Building”, aimed to bring together young people and youth leaders who recognize the urgent need to address climate change, disaster risk reduction, and resilience-building against the negative impacts of climate-induced natural disasters.

This event also aimed to raise interest and enhance awareness among youth about the effects of climate change and on how they can take part in policy and decision-making for the environment; document common youth position in bringing regional or national agenda on climate change, disaster risk reduction, and resilience building.

Climate change is one of the most serious global challenges of our time. And recent happenings have definitely confirmed our growing vulnerabilities to this problem, notes city official Mr. Deogracias Pernites.

“This [climate change] issue is of immense importance for every citizen. And the youth also plays a crucial role in making decisions and creating action to combat this problem and protect the future of our planet”, he added.

In his welcome address, Dr. Othello Capuno, VSU Vice President for Research and Extension, imparted the importance of putting an emphasis on various climate change adaptation and mitigation. He also shared how VSU has been at the forefront in realizing these kinds of activities as part of its mission in saving the environment.

Eastern Visayas being known as one of the prone areas of disasters and calamities, RCCRDC was proud to sponsor and host the national event where the center is located. RCCDC was the main organizer of the activity headed by its director, Dr. Eduardo Mangaoang.

The event was packed with activities such as plenary talks, paper presentations, poster exhibits, and field visits.
