Visayas State University, through its newly established Department of Meteorology and in partnership with WeatherPhilippines Foundation Inc., hosted the Youth Conference on Weather and Climate held at the VSU Convention Center on April 26, 2019, as one of the highlights of the week-long 95th anniversary celebration.
The conference aimed to widen the awareness on weather-related disaster preparedness and resilience among the students and the faculty. WeatherPhilippines typhoon specialist Mr. Adonis B. Manzan and sustainability specialist Ms. Josa Marie L. Salazar, who served as resource persons for the said conference, emphasized the need to empower communities to make informed decisions using localized weather concepts, the Philippines being prone to experience at least 10-20 typhoons a year.
WeatherPhilippines Foundation Inc., a non-government organization founded by the Aboitiz in 2012, is a weather provider that aims to provide Filipinos with premier weather sensing, forecasting system, for them to eventually become #WeatherWiser individuals.
In partnership with the Department of Science and Technology-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI), WeatherPhilippines also aims to provide local governments and communities with free, accurate, and localized weather information that is both available at their website and mobile app.
The conference was the first major event of the department, which was officially established just in 2016. DMet headed by Mr. Charlindo Torrion, will finally offer an undergraduate degree in Meteorology in the academic year 2019-2020.
The event was attended by more than 50 students and faculty in the university.
