2 VSU Com-Sci studs reap best paper, presenter awards in reg’l IT research congress

VSU senior BS in Computer Science students Neptali E. Montañez and Jonel Dominic E. Tapang bagged awards during the 2nd Student Regional Innovation and Computing (STRING) Conference hosted by the Leyte Normal University on April 12, 2019.
Montañez was accorded the Best Paper and Best Paper Presenter awards for his paper on "Development Of Abaca (Musa Textilis) Fiber Grade Classifier Using Convolutional Neural Networks" under the advisory of Mr. Jomari Joseph Barrera.
Meanwhile, Tapang ranked third in the same Best Paper category for his paper on “Detection and Counting of Hepatocytes in White Mice (Mus musculus domesticus) Fed with Fungal Exopolysaccharide using Marker-controlled Watershed Transform and Shape Feature Extraction” with thesis adviser Prof. Michael Anthony Jay B. Regis.
The team bested five other entries in the Computer Science category.
The conference, anchored on the theme: “Embracing research and innovation towards global competitiveness,” was a one-day research congress for undergraduate, graduate and IT professionals in Region VIII.
Organized by the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators – Region VIII (PSITE8), the congress aims to embrace and promote research and development to young researchers, showcase the latest discoveries relative to ICT through research and innovation and provide an avenue for networking and exchange ideas in the field of information technology and allied disciplines.
Delegates from other universities in the region, like Northwest Samar State University, Visayas State University, Leyte Normal University, and Eastern Visayas State University, joined the Congress.
