The Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension headed by Dr. Othello B. Capuno, fused three research papers from three topnotch researchers into a presentation of PARRFI Professorial Chair and Phi Delta Inaugural Lecture on January 20, 2012 at the OVPRE AV Room.
In his welcome message, Dr. Capuno said, that the students, faculty and staff will learn new insights from the research outputs of Dr. Erlinda A. Vasquez (PARRFI Professorial Chair Awardee of 2011 and Phi Delta member) of PhilRootcrops, Dr. Feliciano G. Sinon (new member of Phi Delta) of the National Abaca Research Center, and Dr. Dewoowoogen P. Baclayon (new member of Phi Delta) of Southern Leyte State University, that they can share to their fellow countrymen.
Prof. Rosa Ophelia D. Velarde, OVPRE Research Coordinator, explained a brief background about PARRFI. She said that PARRFI is a foundation with the thrusts of supporting the agricultural development of the government in the different regions through R & D capability basically through human resource development. One of its programs is the Professorial Chair which is awarded to any regular faculty or staff of any state college and university under the PCARRD network.
Dr. Vasquez, presented her post-doctoral research on "Female Sex Pheromone Bouquet of Sweet Potato Weevil, Cylas formicarius Fabr., Identification, Olfactory Assay and Field Evaluation." Her research synthesized the sweetpotato weevil pheromones as a new approach for pest management and control that she conducted in Hohenheim University through the Alexander Von Humboldt Stiftung Research Fellowship Grant.
On the other hand, the two new members of the Phi Delta Honors Society—Dr. Baclayon and Dr. Sinon—presented their studies on "Physio-Chemical and Molecular Analyses of Quality Deterioration in Harvested Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L.) Head" and "Tenacity, Present and Ultimate Fiber Recovery of Abaca Fiber Strands," respectively.
Dr. Baclayon's study examined the physio-biochemical and molecular mechanisms associated with post-harvest senescence and quality deterioration in broccoli.
Meanwhile, Dr. Sinon's study identified the effects of variety, lateral locations and longitudinal positions on gravimetric fineness, tensile strength of abaca fiber strands, and on the ultimate fiber recovery.
Dr. Edgardo E. Tulin, President of the Phi Delta Honors Society, led in the awarding of certificates along with Dr. Othello B. Capuno and Dr. Lucia M. Borines, Chair of Phi Delta Membership Committee.
