The National Abaca Research Center-Visayas (NARC) housed at VSU, earned research funding after the visit of Dr. Reynaldo V. Ebora, executive director of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD), at VSU, January 5.
The agreement came about after a strong recommendation of the Department of Science and Technology-Region VIII for VSU.
Dr. Ebora said he is positive about the progress and outcomes of the research project implemented by NARC in Southern Leyte.
The province is known as one of the top abaca- producing countries in Region VIII, data from the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority said. Benchmark data from NARC said the abaca bunchy top virus commonly beset the farmers in Southern Leyte.
Owing to the various efforts of NARC in partnership with other agricultural agencies to improve farmers’ cultural practices, Dr. Ebora expressed PCAARRD’s commitment to support the ongoing projects.
“VSU is a strong partner of PCAARRD in research and development. NARC’s initiative on abaca rehabilitation has yielded a satisfactory result. PCAARRD is committed to fund these kind of projects devoted to help our abaca farmers.” said Dr. Ebora.
NARC is among the research centers housed at VSU including the National Coconut Research Center-Visayas, Philippine Rootcrops and Research and Training Center, Philippine Carabao Center, and Regional Climate Change Research and Development Center, among other research institutes.
