Official Statement from the Office of the VSU President on the death of a mechanical engineering student on July 23, 2014.
We are deeply saddened by the news of the death of one of our students today.
Earlier in the afternoon of July 23, Wednesday, a mechanical engineering student died in the middle of an ultimate frisbee game. He was participating as a member of the College of Engineering (COE) Bravehearts ultimate frisbee team for the 2014 VSU Intramural Games. He suffered of cardiac arrest while playing.
Paramedics immediately rushed him to the VSU hospital but he was declared dead on arrival.
The university resident physician determined that an existing lung condition, diagnosed in 2010 as per the hospital's medical records, could have been related to his cardiac arrest. Physical impact with a player shortly before his death, however, could not be linked to be a cause of the accident.
We offer our most sincere condolences to his family and friends.
His family is entitled to receive insurance benefits from the university, and VSU will also assist in the expenses for his burial.
We are arranging with the immediate family for VSU to hold a vigil in honor of him in campus, before his remains are brought back to his hometown.
