Clad in Hollywood-inspired costumes as usually seen in the Oscar Awards Night, near to 300 VSU alumni who were officially registered in the VSU Grand Alumni Homecoming 2012 attended the "Hollywood Glam" (Alumni Night) as one of the highlights of the annual celebration. Everyone was enthralled as he/she walked through the aisle in red carpet wearing his/her glamorous attire while entering the hall with an ambience set for Hollywood stars. Trophies especially crafted for the occasion were awarded to the stars of the night.
This year's alumni homecoming was anchored on the tagline "MagKiTiPay (Magkita-kita, Magtigum-tigom, Maglipay-lipay) na sab ta sa ViSCA" conceived by the host batches—Freshmen Batch 1982 and Batch 1985.
The affair kicked off in the morning of May 18, 2012 with a thanksgiving mass at the New Balay Alumni. The lower campus was adorned with flaglets hanged at the VSU mall going to the New Balay Alumni signifying that a celebration similar to that of a barrio fiesta was going on. As the registration of VSU alumni goes on, the alumni had the chance to reminisce with their fellow alumni the memories while they were still students of the then VAC, ViSCA, LSU, and now VSU. The excitement was felt among the alumni as they met their batchmates and former classmates.
In the same occasion, the Alumni Heritage Museum located at the Balay Alumni (where the VSU Laboratory High School Administration Office previously occupied) was launched and inaugurated. The museum features a pictorial display of the old buildings of the University as well as its alumni and those who joined in various alumni homecomings as captured by the lenses of the staff of the Information Office and other concerned faculty, staff, students, and alumni of VSU.
A sumptuous lunch at the VSU Garden Beach Resort followed where the participants enjoyed taking their meals as they continue greeting their fellow alumni.
The merriment continued with a symposium on Capacitating LGUs on Climate Proofing. Successful alumni in their respective fields shared brilliant ideas as speakers during the symposium which included: Dr. Teofanes A. Patindol of VSU's College of Forestry and Environmental Science who talked on "Climate Change and Climate Proofing: Basic Concepts", and Dr. Joel C. Bandibas who is now connected with the Geological Survey of Japan/National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. Dr. Bandibas delved into the topic "Advanced Web Based Mapping and Computing Services for Quick Mapping of Disaster Areas and Monitoring Environmental Change."
The canvassing for the Alumni King and Queen also took place wherein Dr. Alma Castañares-Joglekar and Dr. Joel Bandibas won the title. The First Runner Up was the pair of Ms. Mericel Cua and Mr. Dexter Magan, and the Second Runner Up went to Ms. Stella Saballa-Serrano and Mr. Ulysses Cagasan. The Alumni King and Queen Coronation was held in the evening during the Hollywood Glam (Alumni Night).
The VSU Alumni General Assembly was also held where Dr. Edgardo E. Tulin, president of the VSU Alumni Association Inc. (VSUAAI), reported the accomplishments and plans of the Association. New board members of the VSUAAI were also elected, as follows: Dr. Roberto C. Guarte, Dr. Carlos De La Cruz, Dr. Roberta D. Lauzon, Dr. Beatriz S. Belonias, and Assoc. Prof. Elsie E. Salamat. The new board members were inducted into office by Dr. Tulin during the Alumni Night.
In his very short message during the Alumni Night, VSU President Jose L. Bacusmo warmly welcomed the alumni and encouraged them to enjoy the celebration. The rest of the night was spent for dancing and the grand raffle draw.
Despite the very hectic schedules during the first day until the evening, the alumni still managed to wake up early on May 19 and joined the Fun Run. After the event, they enjoyed eating the usual kind of foods eaten during those years when they were still students of the University during the breakfast.
The two-day activity culminated with a motorcade going to the city proper of Baybay and going back to the University where the different batches had their department reunions.
The sponsorship of the next alumni homecoming was turned over to batches 1983 and 1986.
