VSU Botanic Garden Herbarium is now among 24 registered herbaria in PH

Not only a part of the registered Philippine herbaria, VSU Botanic Garden Herbarium is also listed in the worldwide index of herbaria, which is the Index Herbariorum.

VSU Botanic Garden Herbarium is one of the country's 24 registered and active herbaria and the sole herbarium in the Eastern Visayas region. 

A herbarium is like a plant library, preserving labeled specimens with collection details that serve as an essential reference for research and education.

VSU’s Herbarium is part of its Zonal Center for Biodiversity Conservation and Habitat Restoration (Biodiversity Center), located at Molave Hill. 

Viscans have been using the facility to train some local field guides in spotting characters to identify plant families.

Included in the list of registered herbaria in the Philippines are as follows:

4. Far Eastern University Herbarium

9. Verde Island Passage Center for Oceanographic Research and Aquatic Life Sciences (Batangas State University)
10. Palawan State University Herbarium
11. G.T. Velasquez Phycological Herbarium (University of the Philippines)
12. Jose Vera Santos Memorial Herbarium (University of the Philippines)
13. Philippine National Botanic Garden (University of the Philippines)
14. College of Agriculture Herbarium UP (University of the Philippines Los Baños)
15. Mycological Herbarium (University of the Philippines Los Baños)
16. Forestry Herbarium (University of the Philippines Los Baños)
17. Philippine Herbarium of Cultivated Plants (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Currently, the Index Herbariorum lists 3,567 herbaria worldwide with a total of 396 million botanical specimens permanently housed.
