1st DA Award

The Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 8 (DA RFO 8) recognized VSU as one of its outstanding partners in development, specifically in the agri-fishery sectors in Eastern Visayas.

For its 126th Founding Anniversary, the DA RFO 8 organized the “Pasidungog” ceremony to award its internal and external stakeholders who contributed to implementing their programs and projects to address food security issues in our country.

VSU, as an academic and research institution, has been a longtime and dependable partner of DA RFO 8 in many development projects implemented in the region.

“This plaque of appreciation is a recognition of your outstanding and unwavering support to the Department of Agriculture program in empowering farmers and fisherfolk through collective action towards agricultural efficiencies, productivity, sustainability, and resilience,” the citation reads.

In her acceptance message, VSU President Prose Ivy G. Yepes who received the plaque of recognition on June 25, 2024, at the Leyte Academic Center in Palo, Leyte, highlighted that VSU is committed to helping the agency in providing technical assistance to promote the agri-fishery sectors of Eastern Visayas.

“Visayas State University (VSU), along with other SUCs, is committed to advancing agriculture and fisheries through comprehensive programs and research we offer at our respective SUCs such as agriculture, fisheries, marine biology, and other agricultural programs. As academic institutions, we provide technical assistance to promote sustainable practices such as crop rotation, soil conservation, integrated pest management, and responsible fishing,” President Yepes said.

The Chief Steward of the University also highlighted the importance of looking at the challenges of the current agricultural sector from a brand new perspective to improve its overall benefit for the Filipino people.

“A whole-government approach and systems thinking must likewise be employed to address the complexities of our agri-fishery sectors so we can create synergies that enhance our collective impact. We must dedicate our priority and focus to learning and adopting best practices to enhance our outputs through communication, creative thinking, coordination, and collaboration. Through this, we can achieve remarkable progress in our agri-fishery sectors to ensure a prosperous and sustainable future for the entire region of Eastern Visayas and beyond,” VSU Pres Yepes added.

The Anniversary celebration of DA RFO which they commemorated on June 23rd is anchored on the theme, “Kagawaran ng Agrikultura, Sama-samang Naglilingkod para sa Masaganang Bagong Pilipinas”.

Meanwhile, in a separate event, the VSU Chief Steward served as a keynote speaker of the Provincial Agri-Aqua and Garden Show, one of the activities to commemorate the 64th Founding Anniversary of the Province of Southern Leyte.

As someone who hails from Southern Leyte, the new VSU President is excited to bring in the many agricultural technologies generated by the university to her home province to allow more people to enjoy the benefits of science-based agri-products and locally generated technologies that are suited to the varying needs of the province.

And as a final stop to her important engagements for this week, President Yepes also visited the 2024 Eastern Visayas Regional Science, Technology, Innovation Week. This activity runs today, June 25 until 27, 2024, one of the highlights is showcasing the latest and locally-developed technologies, products, and services of the region.

Spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), this regional exhibition and trade fair is part of the commitment to strengthen the ties of local technology generators in the region with the business group in the province to promote the application of available technologies for micro, small, and medium enterprises.

VSU also took part in the exhibition to allow local businessmen and entrepreneurs to see the many mature technologies that the university has generated throughout the years.
