The Instruction and Evaluation Office (IEO) announced that VSU has renewed its subscription to Turnitin and is now embedded with AI detector capabilities.
Since 2021, VSU has subscribed to Turnitin, an online plagiarism detection tool to ensure quality outputs from our #ProudViscans.
Aside from detecting plagiarized work, Turnitin upgraded its service to identify the authenticity of the student’s submission whether it is AI-generated or not.
With the emergence of free and easily accessible AI tools such as ChatGPT, students may inevitably have used these tools in their submissions.
This AI writing detection feature is available to Turnitin Feedback Studio and has already been embedded in the VSU E-Learning Environment (VSUEE), the university’s learning management system.
According to the official website of Turnitin, the new AI writing detection model is trained to detect content from the GPT-3 and GPT-3.5 language models, which includes ChatGPT. It calculates the overall percentage of text in the submitted document that AI likely generated.
Dr. Ma. Rachel Kim Aure, the IEO Director thanked the institution for upholding the academic integrity of the whole VSU system by subscribing to Turnitin yearly.
"VSU continues to commit to upholding academic integrity in the university system. A subscription to Turnitin is still beneficial in the teaching-learning process. With our renewal this year, we have upgraded it to include AI features in the originality report. Moreover, this is also in response to the growing demand to deliver quality instruction to our students, which will ensure quality student output and allow our faculty to utilize them in their classes, research, and extension work. Thank you, VSU, for providing this platform to all our #Proudviscans."
There will be a training that Turnitin will conduct for the VSU administrators and end-users soon to learn more about the different features of the software, especially the new AI writing detection model.
