VSU just pulled off an impressive opening ceremony for the 37th State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Games this year by lighting up the Upper Oval using recycled plastic bottles during the field demonstration.
Following the arrival of the delegates from the different state universities and colleges (SUCs) in Eastern Visayas, VSU commenced the highly-anticipated sporting event not only with a bang but with the motive to reduce the cost of the props used by the student performers.
With the joint efforts of the Institute of Human Kinetics (IHK) and the committee of Ms. Anna Beth A. Varron, the chairperson of the opening ceremony of the SCUAA Games 2023, conceptualized and organized the highly commendable performance of the first-year and second-year Viscans.
For barely two weeks of practice, especially since it fell between the midterm examination, the Viscan performers poured out one hundred percent of their energy and effort for the opening ceremony.
The highlight of the field demo was the formation of the VSU letters using the yellow lights made from recycled 1.5 liters of empty bottles covered with charol. This was participated by a total of 1,600 #ProudViscans.
According to Ms. Varron, despite the lack of sleep, and with no incentives, their team strived to work excellently. All because of their love for sports and to work hand-in-hand to serve the university.
The choreography and concept of the field demonstration were led by the team of Ms. Varron, Mr. Christian Bacolod, and the junior faculty members of IHK.
The meaning behind the SCUAA Games 2023 theme
This year’s SCUAA theme is “Weaving Strengths: Hinabing Kusog”, which was conceptualized by Mr. Bacolod from IHK. It was inspired by the famous weaving of textiles in Samar and Leyte. The concept lies between the weaving of strength, friendships, camaraderie, and sportsmanship among SUCs of Region 8.
In his welcome speech, VSU President Edgardo Tulin highlighted that the essence of the inter-collegiate sports competition is to forge and build a better world through sports in the spirit of friendship, solidarity, and fair play.
