VSU is PCHRD’s Tuklas Lunas Development Center for Visayas

The Visayas State University (VSU) has been awarded the "Tuklas Lunas Development Center (DOST-PCHRD Natural Substance Research Center) for Visayas" by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD). The award was received by Dr. Jose L. Bacusmo, VSU President, and Dr. Edgardo E. Tulin, VP for Planning and Resource Generation, during the 31st PCHRD Anniversary on March 18, 2013 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza, Manila.
According to Dr. Tulin, since VSU has been identified as the TLDC for Visayas in recognition of its merit in the field of Natural Products Chemistry and Drug Discovery Research, it will serve as a research laboratory on the study of natural substances as drug candidates.
The occasion hinged on the theme "People at the Center of Health and Health Research." Dr. Tulin served as one of the panelists of the discussion on "New Paradigms and Global Trends in Research Publications: How Philippine Research Benefits." The other topic that was discussed was on "People's Health: Listening and Translating Health Needs to Research Actions."
The affair was highlighted with a keynote address from Dr. Alberto R. Romualdez Jr., former Secretary of Health and first Executive Director of PCHRD. It was also attended by special guests such as DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo, and Department of Health Secretary Enrique T. Ona.
PCHRD is one of the three sectoral councils of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) created on March 17, 1982 through Executive Order No. 784 . It is a forward-looking, partnership-based national body responsible for coordinating and monitoring health research activities in the country.
