Dr. Mario Ivan Lopez, Associate Professor at Kyoto University’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) paid Visayas State University (VSU) a working visit on February 10 to 14.
Dr. Lopez toured around the campus, particularly VSU’s research centers, to gain insight into the university’s research activities and find common areas of interest that can open opportunities for future collaboration between VSU and CSEAS.
In a meeting with VSU President Dr. Edgardo E. Tulin, Lopez said he was impressed with VSU’s natural beauty and research productivity. He said he was humbled by the university’s strength and capacity in knowledge generation, praising how different research and academic units work together. He also added that he hopes VSU and CSEAS can formalize collaboration to make way not only for academic but also for cultural exchange.
Aside from visiting the research centers and the rainforestation farming site, the Kyoto professor also shared the CSEAS research activities to development communication students who are taking a course on communication research.
He also visited the Lake Danao Natural Park to get a snapshot of land degradation in Leyte. Dr Ian Navarrete, a VSU alumnus, now a faculty member of the Department of Environmental Science of the Ateneo de Manila University, accompanied Dr. Lopez to VSU.
