The Amaranth, the official student publication of VSU, is set to defend its title as ‘Region 8’s Best Campus Press’ in the 2017 Regional Tertiary Schools Press Conference (RTSPC) at Christ The King College, Samar, February 22-25.

Amaranth Executive Editor Prince Darius Lina is positive that they can maintain the feat especially with an increased monetary contribution from the VSU studentry for the student paper.

“We hope to give justice to the increased support of our students both morally and financially, and once again, bring honor to VSU,” said Lina.

In 2016, RTSPC declared Amaranth as ‘Campus Press of the Year’ after accumulating the most awards in both group and individual competitions. The award is the highest recognition given to a participating student publication.

The Amaranth received the same recognition as the outstanding campus press in 2012. Last year, 36 publications from private and public schools in Eastern Visayas vied for the title.

Besides this accolade, Amaranth also garnered most of the major awards including Best Magazine, Best Website, Best Social Networking Site and Best Documentary last year at Southern Leyte State University, Sogod.

RTSPC is the annual gathering of campus journalists, professors, and communication practitioners from private and public educational institutions in Eastern Visayas. This year’s theme, Campus journalism in the age of fake news & online trolls, aims to tackle how campus journalists thrive amidst the prevalence of misinformation campaigns on social media.
